It all started with a fox.

When I started law school in 1993, I had personally known only one practicing attorney in my whole life.  Any knowledge I had about the law came from television procedurals like Law & Order or Perry Mason.  I assumed civil law was what “corporate” lawyers did.

Then came the fox.  My first class in law school was Real Property, and my first assignment was to brief a case from 1805 called Pierson v. Post.  It was about two men near Southampton, New York, and their separate pursuit of a fox across an uninhabited beach.

When one man got the fox, the other man sued for trespass.

What followed next was an in-depth legal analysis of what property is.  Pierson v. Post is generally considered the most famous property law case in American legal history.  But to me, it was my first brush with legal analysis.

I was amazed at how thorough and serious the Court took its duty to reach a proper conclusion over what others may have considered a minor dispute.  I was hooked.

Real property and the law became my calling.  Now, after nearly thirty years, I still love it.  It has become my profession and my hobby.  I have also been fortunate to work with others in our firm that have the same calling.

This Blog is an expression of our interest and appreciation of real property and construction law.  Please enjoy!

Sincerely,

Jason Vaughn
